Kevin Lai

Kevin Lai

Executive Director, Chief Economist at Daiwa Capital Markets Hong Kong

  • 5. US & China Relationship

Kevin Lai has 22 years’ experience as a regional economist, and was one of few on the street today to witness the entire Asian Financial Crisis. In early 2014, he made 3 major “outlier” calls. He predicted the USD would enter a new phase of strength. He anticipated huge money outflows from China and the CNY to depreciate sharply and the world should be worried about it. In August 2016, he saw a reasonable chance for Donald Trump to win the presidential election and was the first in the market to talk about a looming trade war between the US and China and to measure how different tariff scenarios would affect the Chinese economy. More recently, in his predictions for 2018, he warned that Trump would start going after China as soon as he has handled North Korea. Kevin’s views have not always been well received yet the eventuality underlines his prescience, with Bloomberg once flagging that foresight in a report entitled “Yuan Bear in the Wilderness in 2014 Now Warns of China Credit Crisis.”

彼のアジア地域、特に中国に関する深い洞察はBloombergにおける記事“Yuan Bear in the Wilderness in 2014 Now Warns of China Credit Crisis”においても取り上げられている。
