Michael Pettis is a professor of international finance at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management and Senior Associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. His work and research focuses on monetary policy, trade policy, and the development of the banking and financial markets in China.
Prior to his current positions Pettis spent fifteen years as a banker and trader on Wall Street, nine years as an adjunct professor at the Columbia University Business School, and three years as a professor at the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, in Beijing. Before moving to China in 2001 he was Managing Director and ran the Liability Management and Latin American Capital Markets groups at Bear Stearns. He has also run fixed income trading and capital market desks at CSFB and Manufacturers Hanover (now JP Morgan). During this time he has advised the Mexican government on the privatization of the national banking system, the Macedonian government on its commercial bank debt restructuring, the South Korean government on its 1998 commercial bank debt restructuring, and various Latin American governments on their debt issuance strategies.

Pettis received an MBA in Finance and an MIA in Development Economics from Columbia University.

Mr. Lai joined Daiwa as a senior economist in 2007. Prior to that, he worked in similar positions for Hang Seng Bank and National Australia Bank for more than 10 years. He has conducted extensive macroeconomic research, as well as analysing key industries in the region. Mr. Lai was nominated as the AustCham NAB Economist from 2000 to 2003. His hallmark publications include two papers in 2002 forecasting a long-term boom in outbound tourism and oil demand in China. More recently, he has been known as a contrarian economist and has made a few influential macro calls. Mr. Lai graduated from the London School of Economics in 1994.

Charles I. Plosser served as the president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia from 2006 until his retirement in 2015. In his position, he served as a member of the Federal Open Market Committee, which is responsible for U.S. monetary policy. During this period, the world experienced a global financial crisis and a severe recession, requiring extraordinary action by monetary policymakers. He also served during a time of dramatic change in the activities of the Federal Reserve Banks, including their role in financial services and the payments system as well as bank supervision. Among many other duties, he chaired the Committee on Investment Performance, which was responsible for oversight of the entire Federal Reserve System’s employee pension and thrift funds.

Prior to joining the Federal Reserve, Plosser was the John M. Olin distinguished professor of Economics and Public Policy and director of the Bradley Policy Research Center at the University of Rochester’s William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration, where he served as dean from 1993 to 2003. In 2004, he was a visiting scholar at the Bank of England. He is also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Over the years, Plosser has lectured to academic and business audiences worldwide on topics ranging from management education to economics and public policy issues. Prior to his public service at the Federal Reserve, he also served as a consultant to numerous corporations on topics ranging from strategic planning and forecasting to portfolio and pension fund management, capital budgeting and financial analysis. He was a member of the New York State Board of Economic Advisors and has served on the board of directors of ViaHealth, Inc. and RGS Energy Group, Inc. He has also served on the advisory board of the University Technology Seed Fund, LLC. In addition, he served as a director of the Graduate Management Admission Council from 1997 to 2003 and served as chairman of the board from 2002 to 2003.

Plosser earned his Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Chicago in 1976 and 1972, respectively. He is a 1970 graduate of Vanderbilt University, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree (cum laude with honors) and is a member of Tau Beta Pi (National Scholastic Honor Society for Engineers). He and his wife, Janet Plosser, have three children.

Jesper Koll has been researching and investing in Japan since becoming a resident in 1986. On July 1, 2015 he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of WisdomTree Japan K.K. For the previous two decades Jesper served as the Managing Director of Research and Chief Strategist for major U.S. Investment banks - J.P. Morgan and Merrill Lynch. His analysis and insights have earned him a position on several Japanese government- and corporate advisory committees. Jesper is one of the few non-Japanese members of the Keizai Doyukai, the Japan Association of Corporate Executives. He has written two books in Japanese, Towards a New Japanese Golden Age and The End of Heisei Deflation.
After arriving in Japan in 1986 Jesper initially worked as an aide to a Member of Parliament. Jesper has a Masters degree from the School of Advanced and International Studies at Johns Hopkins University and was a research fellow at both Tokyo University and Kyoto University. He is a graduate of the United World College Lester B. Pearson of the Pacific.

KENTA ICHIKAWA was appointed in July 2015 to Deputy Director-General in charge of JGB and treasury management, Financial Bureau, the Ministry of Finance, Japan.
Mr. Ichikawa joined the Ministry of Finance in 1985. He served as Budget Examiner for national defense budget from 2009 to 2011, and was appointed to Director of Foreign Exchange Market Division in 2011 and Director of Policy Planning and Research Division of the Minister’s Secretariat in 2012. Prior to his current position, Mr. Ichikawa was sent to the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Secretariat for two years and served as Deputy Director-General of the Cabinet Headquarters for Administrative Reform Promotion.
Mr. Ichikawa graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1985(LL.B). He also studied international development at Cornell University's graduate school (MPS).

Mr. Mutoh spent over forty years working in the public sector and has been Chairman of DIR since 2008. Recently, Mr. Mutoh made the opening remarks at IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings 2012 held in Tokyo. Mr. Mutoh and DIR proposed the establishment of the Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Reconstruction Fund right after the earthquake on March 11, 2011. Currently, he serves as Chief Executive Officer of The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Prior to Daiwa, Mr. Mutoh was Deputy Governor of the BOJ from 2003, and was engaged in the lifting of the zero-interest-rate monetary policy. He was appointed administrative vice minister of Finance in 2000, and was engaged in the planning and execution of the financial policy for successive cabinets.

Mr. Mutoh graduated from The University of Tokyo in 1966 with a bachelor's degree in Laws (LL.B.).

武藤氏は、40年以上にわたり公的部門で活躍し、2008年に大和総研理事長に就任。

最近では、2012年東京で開催されたIMF世銀総会にて開会挨拶を行い、2011年東日本大震災の直後には、大和総研と共に震災復興基金の設立を呼びかけた。現在、東京オリンピック・パラリンピック競技大会組織委員会の事務総長も務める。

大和総研入社前は、2003年から日本銀行副総裁を務め、ゼロ金利政策の解除に従事。2000年に大蔵事務次官に就任してから、歴代内閣における金融政策の策定及び執行を担当した。

Peter Spiegel is the Brussels bureau chief for the Financial Times, overseeing the London-based newspaper’s coverage of the European economic crisis and Europe’s role in global affairs. In 2012 and 2013, Peter and his team won back-to-back Society of American Business Writers and Editors awards for their coverage of the eurozone debt crisis.
Peter returned to the FT in August 2010 after spending nearly five years in Washington covering foreign policy and military affairs for the Los Angeles Times and the Wall Street Journal. In both jobs, Peter focused on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, traveling frequently overseas, including multiple visits to both war zones. While at the Los Angeles Times, he was co-winner of the newspaper’s top internal journalism award, the 2008 Editor’s Prize, for his coverage of the Bush administration’s surge in Iraq.

Phillip Apel is Head of Fixed Income at Henderson and chairs the Fixed Income Investment Strategy Group (ISG). He joined Henderson in 2005 as Head of Interest Rate Strategy and established the Rates Alpha Team to drive interest rate strategies in Henderson’s fixed income portfolios, as well as helping to establish the ISG. His career began in 1988 as an assistant fund manager at Sun Life of Canada, before progressing to fund manager at UBS Global Asset Management, where he later became the Head of Global Sovereign Strategy.

He graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BA (Hons) in Economics and is a member of the CFA Institute UK.

フィリップ・アペル氏はヘンダーソン・グローバル・インベスターズの債券ヘッド・債券投資戦略グループ(ISG)統括。2005年に金利戦略部門ヘッドとしてヘンダーソンに入社、金利アルファ戦略チームを立ち上げ、ヘンダーソンの債券ポートフォリオにおける金利戦略を主導するとともに、ISGの設立に携わった。1988年、サンライフ・カナダでアシスタントファンドマネージャーとしてキャリアをスタートさせた後、UBSグローバルアセットマネジメントでのファンドマネージャーを経て、その後は同社のグローバル・ソブリン戦略ヘッドを務めた。

David joined BlueBay in September 2013 as Head of Credit Strategy within the Chief Investment Office. He is also a member of BlueBay’s Investment and Asset Allocation Committees. Drawing on more than 20 years of applied macroeconomic, policy and sovereign credit experience, David advises and coordinates the Investment Committee macro-investment perspective. As a member of the Asset Allocation Committee, he shares responsibility for tactical asset allocation across BlueBay’s suite of multi-asset credit funds. David was previously global head of Fitch’s Sovereign and Supranational Group, responsible for more than 130 ratings of the world’s largest fixed-income issuers. Prior to Fitch, David was a senior economist at UBS Investment Bank and at HM Treasury where he advised on international economic and debt issues, including representing the UK at international debt restructuring negotiations at the Paris Club of Official Creditors. David holds an MSc from Birkbeck College, University of London and a first-class degree in Economics.

Michael J Moran is the chief economist of Daiwa Capital Markets America Inc. He is responsible for preparing the firm’s economic forecast and interest rate outlook. He travels frequently to visit the clients of Daiwa Securities and writes weekly economic commentary. Mr. Moran also is involved in the flux of financial markets, as he spends a portion of each day on Daiwa’s trading floor interpreting economic statistics and Federal Reserve activity for traders and salespeople. Mr. Moran is quoted frequently in the financial press, appears regularly on cable news shows, and writes periodically for one of Japan’s leading newspapers, the Nikkei Financial Daily. He also has published articles in several journals and periodicals. Before joining Daiwa Securities America, Mr. Moran worked as an economist at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C. where he analyzed a broad range of issues dealing with the financial sector of the economy. He was on the faculty of Pennsylvania State University from1979 to 1980 and taught on a part-time basis at George Washington University from 1980 to 1987. Mr. Moran received his Ph.D. in economics from Pennsylvania State University in 1980 and a B.S. in business administration from the University of Bridgeport in 1975. He became a CFA charterholder in 2002.

Mr. Chris Scicluna heads Daiwa’s research capacity on the major European economies and non-Asian emerging markets, while also working closely with Daiwa’s analysts in Tokyo to lead Daiwa Europe’s research on Japan’s economy and financial markets.
Prior to joining Daiwa in 2005, Mr. Scicluna spent more than eight years as an economist at the UK Treasury. He had a range of roles, including as head of the European economic analysis team, and earlier advised on the Asian and emerging market financial crises during the second half of the 1990s.
Mr. Scicluna also worked for three years at the European Commission developing policy relating to the functioning of the Euro and European financial regulation.
Mr. Scicluna has a BSc in Economics and Statistics, and an MA in International Economics.

Mr. Lewis joined Daiwa in 2000 as its European Economist, becoming Head of Economic Research in 2003 and Head of Research in 2011. Prior to joining Daiwa, Mr. Lewis worked for five years at the UK Treasury where he worked in a variety of policy and analytical roles, including the assessment of whether the UK should join the euro and the UK’s fiscal policy framework.
